Standing Firm Despite Temptations – Olaniyi Odunlade
This was made known in his message during the Youth Service on Sunday, at St. Matthew’s Anglican Church, Ile-Ife Osun State. Youth Sunday holds every third Sunday of every month across all Churches in the Church Nigeria Anglican Communion
Below is the full message:
Temptation is the thought of acting against God’s will and instructions
The first instance of this was in Gen 3,
Adam and Eve received and exalted the serpent’s instruction over God’s. (Gen 2:16&17, Gen 3:6)
The serpent came to them with a stand that this thought was much better than God’s instruction, the same way the devil presents it to us today…We should always remember that “the plan of God is good…(Jer 29:11)”.
The source of temptation is the devil, God doesn’t tempt (James 1:12-15)…. and the devil wants you to believe he has your best interest and yielding will give you authority and power.
Let us consider the temptation of the first (Adam) and Second (Jesus) Adam
Adam and Eve Gen 3:5
Jesus Math 4: 3&9
Adam and Eve fell because they exalted the serpent’s instruction over God’s intention for them (Gen 2:9, Rev 2:7)
Jesus on the other hand was victorious, as He exalted God’s instructions over the devil’s ( Matt 4:4,7&10)
Learning from Christ’s victory over temptation
◦ The Holy Spirit of God led Him, a man not led by the Spirit is susceptible to temptations…. The Spirit teaches you the Word and brings the Word to your remembrance. (Matt 4:1, John 14:26)
◦ We can overcome by being careful, knowing who we are in God, and asserting God’s Word to the devil when he comes up with the thoughts (1Cor 10:12&13)
◦ It takes a man who is conversant with God’s Word to assert the same in the face of temptation, as the reality of who we are and what God has proposed for us is in His Word (Psalms 119:9,11&24)
Food for thought:
It looks good does not mean that it is from God, but if it is from God, it will be good.
