Archbishop Borokini Raises Alarm Over Economic Hardship, Calls for Urgent Government Action

Rates Tinubu Administration 60%, Urges Focus on Job Creation and Security

The Archbishop of Ondo Ecclesiastical Province and Bishop of Akure Diocese, The Most Rev’d Dr. Simeon Borokini CFAT, Ph.D has expressed deep concern over the worsening economic hardship in Nigeria, warning that the situation is affecting not only individuals and families but also religious institutions.

Delivering his charge at the 1st Session of the 15th Synod of the Diocese of Akure, held at St. James’ Anglican Church, Oda, Akure, themed “Trusting the God of Abundant Grace” (2 Corinthians 9:8), the Archbishop lamented the dire financial struggles faced by many Nigerians.

The Church doesn’t receive any subvention from the government,” he noted. “It survives on the contributions of members. But if the economy is bad and people don’t have money, the Church also suffers. That’s why we’re calling on the government to improve the economic situation.”

Archbishop Borokini emphasized the need for the federal government to prioritize the establishment of industries and the creation of sustainable employment opportunities. According to him, economic development would empower citizens and support institutions such as the Church, which rely heavily on public goodwill and donations.

Despite the challenges, the Archbishop commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for progress made in tackling insecurity, especially in the northern regions.

There is a noticeable reduction in banditry and kidnappings in the North, possibly due to the efforts of the Defence Minister and security agencies,” he said. “Although we can’t give a 100% score, there is improvement. But more needs to be done nationwide, particularly in addressing herdsmen attacks and kidnappings, which remain a threat to farmers and travelers.”

He noted that resolving the nation’s security challenges would positively impact agricultural productivity and reduce the hunger experienced by many Nigerians.

Borokini also applauded Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, for the visible infrastructural development in Abuja and other regions. He encouraged the government to intensify such efforts across the country for the benefit of the general populace.

In addressing youth unemployment, the Archbishop warned that prolonged idleness among graduates and young people could lead to an increase in social vices.

“I’m not saying the government must provide jobs for everyone, but efforts must be made to create opportunities that will engage our youths. It is crucial for national development and security,” he added.

On economic reforms, the cleric welcomed recent policies in the foreign exchange market, describing the naira’s relative stability as a positive step.

We commend the President on the foreign exchange reforms, which have brought some level of stability,” Borokini stated.

In his overall assessment, Archbishop Borokini rated the Tinubu administration 60 percent, acknowledging efforts made while calling for intensified actions in economic recovery, job creation, and national security to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians.

The 1st Session of the 15th Synod concluded with a thanksgiving service and the preferment of some clergy, marking a solemn and hopeful end to the important diocesan event.
