CAN I GO INTO POLITICS WITH THE CURRENT HAPPENINGS IN THE WORLD

The question above is one that obviously plagues the minds of many Christians when we consider the unacceptable performance of political leadership observed in our country and around the world. Many are often bothered about why a Christian should be found in the company of “unbelievers”, as we most often consider the many practitioners of partisan politics in our country. “Be not unequally yoked with unbelievers”, is a common response we find ourselves leaning to in the Holy Bible when we look at the often immoral actions of the politicians in our midst, when considered against the admonition of the LORD for us to love our neighbours as ourselves, and to live a holy life dedicated to doing good.

That said, what exactly is politics? A quick glance into the Webster Dictionary defines politics as, “the art or science of governance”. It also explains it further by saying, “it is the art or science concerned with guiding or influencing government policy”. So basically, politics is public administration.

Now for a Christian, should we participate in politics?

The above answer is clear, when we consider the emergence of the CHURCH after the resurrection of our LORD. In Acts of the Apostles Chapter 2, the Bible records the creation of a nation of believers in CHRIST, we sold off their possessions and continued in one accord with one another under the leadership of the Apostles. At a particular point in their history, it became necessary for the Body of believers to bring some form of administration into that nation. The need for that administration, was to solve the problems of the people, when complaints began to arise concerning the distribution of resources. The process of resolving communal issues in such a way and manner, as to guarantee the peaceful coexistence of the people and the continuation of the purposes of their existence, is politics.
