THE CHURCH OF NIGERIA, ANGLICAN COMMUNION, HAS GIVEN CLEAR GUIDELINES ON HOW POLITICIANS AND GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS SHOULD BE RECEIVED DURING SERVICES AND PROGRAMMES IN ALL PARISHES.
The Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), under the leadership of the Primate, The Most Revd Dr Henry Ndukuba, has released new guidelines on the participation of politicians and government officials during church services and programmes. This was communicated through a memo signed by the Primate at the Episcopal Consultation held in the Diocese of Nike, Enugu.
The Church raised concerns about the growing trend of using church gatherings as political stages, warning that this practice could undermine the true purpose of Christian worship.
Key highlights of the guidelines include:
* The Church welcomes everyone, including politicians and public officials, to its services and programmes.
* The Church must remain non-partisan and avoid promoting any political party or candidate.
* Leaders and members must guard against actions or words that could create division or suggest political bias.
The memo further instructs that:
* Politicians invited to speak must first be briefed and guided appropriately.
* Guests must be told clearly that the Church is not a place for political campaigns or propaganda.
* Church leaders must avoid making remarks or gestures that appear politically motivated.
* No official should praise or glorify any guest in a way that tarnishes the Church’s reputation.
* Politicians, where possible, should not use the Church’s lectern, which is reserved for God’s Word.
The Church also affirmed its role in engaging with leaders on issues affecting society but emphasised that it must always maintain its Christian witness, remaining a beacon of light and truth (Matthew 5:13–14).
These measures are aimed at protecting the sanctity of worship, preserving the Church’s neutrality, and fostering unity among believers.
